ARTISTS have bid a fond farewell to the leader of their group.

Members of Lee Art Group, based in Lee-on-the-Solent, saw long-standing Avril Poppitt step down at the 41st annual meeting yesterday.

Avril will remain a member of the club and will continue to help in the future.

Avril’s final speech was met with a round of applause by members and honorary members and visitors at the meeting held in the Methodist Church Hall in Lee-on-the-Solent’s High Street.

New chairman Barry Staples was elected to take over her role at the meeting.

The group will be busy this year, attending the Lee-on-the-Solent Residents’ Association Family Fun Day on May 6, which will be held opposite the Community Centre in Twyford Drive from 2pm.

And each Monday morning painting sessions will be held at the Methodist Church Hall.

The club’s annual exhibition will be on display at the Explosion Museum in Heritage Way in Gosport in August.
