ICE rinks crop up in unusual places at this time of year but perhaps the most bizarre is in a church.

For two days Cowplain Evangelical Church Hall will be taken over by skaters.

Student pastor James Lee is organising the event which begins on Friday at 9am.

He said: ‘It’s an opportunity for the community to come together and have a lot of fun.

‘We have a great building here and some lovely volunteers who are more than willing to help out.

‘The ice rink fits inside the church hall and there’s space for about 30 people to skate on it at any one time.’

He added: ‘The elders of the church were having a good laugh about how to open it. They were even talking about putting on a Strictly Come Dancing on ice sort of show but decided none of them look too good in lycra.’

It costs £4 for one hour’s skating. The rink is open from 9am to 9pm on December 2 and December 3.
