REPAIRS are being made to Chichester Cross after it was damaged by storms.

Scaffolding has been put up around the landmark at the centre of the city.

Keith Blow, property manager for Chichester City Council, said it was a public safety hazard, despite being secure.

He said: ‘Stress has been placed on this area by the stone ball and vane being forced over and thus the top stone roof section has now cracks on all four sides which potentially is making this a public safety hazard although currently it is secure.

‘My recommendation is to remove the top section immediately for safety reasons with a view to replace like for like.’

The council sought permission from English Heritage to do the work.
