YOUNG stonemason Sam Elgar has helped to lead a project to build a stone bench that will be the centrepiece of a new public space in London.

The 20-year-old, from Chichester, completed his apprenticeship training at Chichester-based Cathedral Works Organisation and has led a team of apprentices to create a stone bench from 10 pieces of Portland stone, each weighing 10 tons.

The bench will be unveiled at Cheapside later this month.

Sam said: ‘The greatest challenge of this project is learning to work with the speed and accuracy needed to achieve an excellent quality end result.’
