IT WAS a surprise extra treat for people visiting the Emirates Spinnaker Tower as the Clipper race yachts sailed past in the harbour.

The 12 boats are heading to London and performed their parade of sails alongside the tower.

The height of the tower gave a great vantage point to see the boats which will start the round the world race on August 31.

For many of the visitors it was great to see the 72-foot boats.

Dan Ford, from Petersfield, said: ‘They are very impressive. It was great to see.’

The fleet are setting off for the Clipper Round the World Race has left Gosport.

The 12 yachts sailed out of Gosport Marina this morning in line astern formation past the Emirates Spinnaker Tower which will is expected to continue until 1.30pm.

Skippers said they were excited and raring to go for the challenge.

The fleet will then leave for St Katherine Docks in London from where the 11-month race starts on August 30.
