A community clean-up for '¨the Queen's 90th birthday

HORNDEAN was given a spring clean for the Queen last weekend, as local volunteers joined a nationwide campaign to clean up their community in celebration of the Queen's 90th birthday.

The litter pickers collected around 40 bags of rubbish, two tyres, two gas cylinders, around 20 breeze blocks and 40 used nappies.

The event was supported by East Hampshire District Council (EDHC) and its contractor, The Landscape Group, which provided the volunteers with bin bags, litter pickers, and hi-vis jackets.

They also took the rubbish away after collection.

Sally Thomas, event organiser, said: ‘We were amazed by how much rubbish we managed to collect in such a short time.

‘It’s really helped make a difference to how those parts of the village look.

‘I’m delighted there is so much enthusiasm for keeping the local villages clean.

‘I want to thank the 15 volunteers who worked so hard, and EHDC and The Landscape Group for supporting us.’

Another litter-picking event is due to be held in Horndean, Clanfield and the surrounding villages on Sunday, March 20.

More volunteers are encouraged to go along and help out.

The group will be meeting in Morrison’s car park, Lakesmere Road, at 9.30am.

Guy Shepherd, EHDC councillor for Horndean Downs, said: ‘I was really pleased to see such strong community participation.

‘It just shows what we can achieve when we all pull together and I’m sure we’ll get another great response at the next event.

‘I’m delighted EHDC and The Landscape Group have been able to support this brilliant scheme.

‘There are more than 20 litter-picks like this happening across the district.’

East Hampshire District Council will be sharing pictures of community clean-ups on social media and in local publicity.
