CAGED hens will soon be given the opportunity to enjoy a free range retirement thanks to the British Hen Welfare Trust.

The charity rehomes commercial laying hens and, through its nationwide army of volunteers, has rehomed 400,000 hens since 2005.

On Saturday the pop-up centre in Denmead will be rehoming a number of hens but the charity still needs people to come forward and help make a difference to the lives of the birds.

Gaynor Davies, logistics co-ordinator for the charity, said: ‘We are very grateful to everyone who has offered to rehome our birds but we need to ensure that every hen has a home waiting for her when she comes out of her colony cage.

‘There are still a few needing somewhere to scratch around and enjoy having free range fun. Our wonderful team of volunteers will be on hand on the day to ensure all goes well.’
