Dirty food firms slapped with hundreds of warnings after inspections in Portsmouth, Havant, Gosport and Fareham

TRADERS across the area have been slapped with hundreds of written warnings on food hygiene issues dozens of times last year, figures reveal.

The Food Standards Agency issued 75 informal warnings in Portsmouth to businesses breaching hygiene and safety laws in 2019-20 – the lowest number of any authority locally.

The enforcement action came following planned visits by FSA officials and led to four voluntary closures and 29 hygiene improvement notices in the city.

In Fareham, a whopping 138 warnings were issue to food premises in the town.

And inspectors took formal enforcement action against traders on 10 occasions, which included three seizures of food not fit for consumption and the issuing of seven hygiene improvement notices.

While in Havant, a total of 127 informal written warnings were issued to food firms, with inspectors taking formal action against one trader.

In Gosport, 82 written warning were handed out and formal action was taken twice in the form of two hygiene improvement notices.
