Dockyards subject of free lecture in Portsmouth

THE only two remaining dockyards in the United Kingdom will the be topic of a free public lecture at the University of Portsmouth's Portland Building tonight from 6pm to 7pm.

Maritime history expert Dr Ann Coats will lead the lecture on the Portsmouth and Devonport dockyards, which follows three years of research into the facilities. Dr Coats will talk about a report she has written on the dockyards.

She said: ‘Nothing so comprehensive has been written previously about 20th century British dockyards, so its assessment of the historical, military, industrial, matériel, personnel, engineering and architectural aspects, set within social, political and strategic contexts, is novel.

‘The report combines data, narrative and analysis and has been enriched by discussions with many institutions, societies and individuals. It will be important for the future interpretation and management of the two remaining dockyards.’

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception and tickets can be booked on eventbrite.co.uk.
