DRAGON boat racers have helped raise thousands of pounds for a children’s charity.

Fourteen teams went against each other in the event, which has raised more than £6,000 for the Fareham-based Rainbow Centre.

Accountants BDO teamed up with the centre, which helps children with motor skills problems as well as adult stroke victims, to host the Dragon Boat Challenge at Mayflower Park.

Spectators cheered teams from local businesses, battling it through the heats to reach the final, which saw Draper Tools grasp victory from accountants Khan Morris by less than half a second, with hosts BDO in third.

Lead partner at BDO Southampton Malcolm Thixton said: ‘It was a great day and BDO would like to thank all the teams who put in real effort both on and off the water to raise money for such a good local cause.

‘An unexpected place in the final race for the BDO crew was an added bonus.’

Fundraising manager at the Rainbow Centre Clare Acklam added: ‘The day was a huge success and the competitive rivalry between each team made it doubly exciting.

‘I’d like to thank everyone at BDO and all who raced for supporting the Rainbow Centre.’
