The 19-year-old scored a place in one of the competition’s preliminary rounds after wowing judges at an audition, at Miss England’s Leicester HQ earlier this month.

Now, to stand a chance of appearing at the fixture’s 2018 semi-finals and clinching the coveted national title, she is calling on the voting support of her home community – who will act as one judge on the contest’s adjudicating panel.

Tegan, who swapped Emsworth for Oxford when she started her degree in event management in September, said: ‘It would mean so much to me to have the backing of the people of Emsworth and Portsmouth. Since starting university, I really miss home.

‘Emsworth is the sort of place where you can’t even go to the shops without seeing and stopping to chat with someone you know – it’s so friendly. I hope I can do the area proud and show them what Miss England is all about.’

On the competition she faces in the heat, the former Bourne Community College student and British Touring Car Championship grid girl, said: ‘This is about so much more than appearance.

‘Many of the girls I’m up against have degrees, speak multiple different languages and run their own businesses.

‘There is a person and an aspiration behind the face of each and every entrant, and I hope people back home will see mine and show their support.

‘My ultimate goal is to work as an organiser for one of the Formula One teams and I hope the confidence and experience I gain from this competition will help me reach that life goal.’

The winner of Miss England 2018 will win £30,000 and spend a year promoting the competition’s youth development charity, Beauty with a Purpose.
