THE secret to making a truly great burger, according to Caroline Stafford, is to bend to desire and add whatever you want to it.

And she should know.

The 40-year-old has just won a competition to have her burger served at pubs across the country.

Mrs Stafford’s creation, called Euro’s Finest, consists of a 6oz beef burger, breaded chicken breast, bacon, pepperoni and mozzarella. It is topped off with barbecue sauce and mayonnaise – all in a ciabatta bun.

Mrs Stafford said: ‘It’s everything that I like. I was trying to make something that I, my husband and my son would all enjoy.’

Mrs Stafford entered the competition to have her burger included on a World Cup-themed menu at Flaming Grill’s chain of 100 pubs.

The burger received more than 300 votes to win the competition.

‘You’ve got the pepperoni and mozzarella from Italy, and I guess bacon is a UK staple, so I guess it has that international flavour,’ she said.

Mrs Stafford, of Fareham, won a £500 prize for her efforts, which she said would go towards a 15th wedding anniversary holiday to Edinburgh for her and husband Sean.

She said: ‘I was quite shocked when I found out I had won. Shocked and proud.’

Mrs Stafford’s son, 12-year-old Patrick, said the burger had his stamp of approval.

‘It’s nice. It’s just what I and mum and dad like,’ he said.

Diana Stephens is managing director at The Cocked Hat, a Flaming Grill pub in Gosport.

She said the burger was a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Ms Stephens said: ‘This will be our champion burger for our burger festival, which we have running throughout the World Cup. It gets feedback and it’s what our guests want.’

The pub chain has promised to give 10p from every Euro’s Finest burger sold to charity, Prostate Cancer UK.

Mrs Stafford said she was a football fan, and hoped many pub-goers would be able to enjoy her burger during the World Cup.

‘I love football and I’m really looking forward to it,’ she said.

The World Cup starts today with a match between hosts Brazil and Croatia.

England’s first game will be against Italy on Saturday.
