Geoffrey Townley was inundated with offers for the solid timber Buddha which has been sat outside Bahn Thai restaurant on Wickham Road in Fareham since Geoffrey opened the place.

He said: ‘It was bought by someone local for their garden and so I only had to move it five miles.’

The ornament, which is just under 7ft tall and 4ft wide, was sold for £1,500.

Geoffrey said: ‘It is worth much more than that but it has gone to a good home.

He picked up the Buddha, which was painted gold in Bali.

Geoffrey added: ‘I worked at Portchester Dock but the job took me across the globe.

‘I remember spotting these large, beautiful Buddhas in a timber yard in Bali. I wanted two as I thought they’d be perfect for my garden.’

Geoffrey still has the second Buddha in his garden in Bishop’s Waltham.

He said: ‘They are very soothing and I am happy to have sold it to someone else.’
