Fire crews attend blaze in ground floor flat in Fratton

FIRE crews were called to a fire in the kitchen of a ground floor flat in a Fratton low rise last night.

Two engines attended the scene at a property in Trafalgar Place, in Fratton, at 10.30pm.

The fire had started on the hob of a cooker, which had been left unattended while the resident went to the shops, according to crew manager Richard Furse of Southsea Fire Station.

He said: ‘The resident said it was put down to having a faulty cooker.

‘She had popped to the shops and what was on the hob had caught light.

‘There was a lot of damage to the hob and the extractor fan, and a fair bit of smoke damage.’

An ambulance crew treated the resident at the scene for minor burns to her hands and smoke inhalation, which she had incurred trying to put the fire out herself.

Warning others to keep a safe distance in the event of a fire, crew manager Furse said: ‘Call the emergency services – in the event of a fire, get out and stay out.’

The fire fighters left the flat at 12am.
