Fire crews save dog and owners from pond in Emsworth

FIREFIGHTERS were called to rescue a dog and its elderly owners after they got stuck in a pond.

Fire crews from Emsworth, Cosham, Fareham and Lyndhurst fire stations went to the scene in Emsworth just after midday on Monday.

The group had got into trouble when their 12-year-old springer spaniel fell off the edge of Mill Pond in Bath Road.

The deaf and partially-blind dog was on a walk with its elderly owners when it toppled over the bank into the water and swam out to the middle.

A member of the public raised the alarm and called the emergency services.

They helped the owners to throw a rope out to the dog, which it then managed to follow back to shore.

A spokesman from the fire service said that the couple, believed to be in their 60s, had climbed into the pond to save their dog before the fire crews arrived and they too had to be given assistance to get out of the pond.

The dog was treated with first aid on the scene and then taken to the vet to recover.
