THERE are a few spaces left at an event to get electric blankets tested.

Hampshire County Council’s Trading Standards department has teamed up with firefighters in the area to offer free safety checks.

The checks are only available by a pre-booked appointment and the spaces are limited.

There are only a few appointments left at the checking event at Gosport fire station on October 4.

Meanwhile places are still available at Fareham fire station on October 8, Waterlooville fire station on October 9, Havant’s council offices on October 18 or Hayling Island at the United Reformed Church Hall in Hollow Lane, Mengham, on October 29.

In the last 15 years, about 15,000 blankets have been tested in the area.

Around 45 per cent of the blankets tested failed the safety checks.

The most common problems are that they are old, worn out, have poor wiring, broken controls or offer no protection against overheating.
