IT’S the biggest sporting spectacle Portsmouth has ever seen – and now you can get your hands on tickets.

From today, they are available online and they give people the chance to watch the America’s Cup racing off Southsea in July.

The seafront will be transformed for the World Series four-day sporting and entertainment extravaganza as Sir Ben Ainslie brings the prestigious event to Southsea.

And 140,000 people are expected to watch the racing from the seafront over the four days with many more catching up on big screens around the city.

Organisers have set aside 10,000 free tickets for Portsmouth residents to ensure they get a front row view of the action from July 23 to 26.

Although the 30,000 daily tickets for the waterfront festival arena are also free, spectators must register for them online.

Other tickets will be on sale at prices ranging from £20 for the ‘fanzone’ to £395 for hospitality packages.

Leslie Greenhalgh, the event director, has urged fans to act quickly as they are expected to be snapped up.

Leslie, from Team Origin, said: ‘We want to make sure Portsmouth residents don’t miss out. The action will take place right next to Southsea Common.

‘There will be an amazing view of the racing. It won’t be like watching little yachts on the Solent, in the distance.

There will be an amazing view of the racing. We want to make sure Portsmouth residents don’t miss out.

‘This will be very close to the shore with live commentary and you will even be able to hear what the sailors are saying to each other.

‘It’s very fast-paced action and will be nothing like people are used to seeing – with racing up to 50 knots.

‘These boats fly above the water. They lift out completely because of the speed.

‘Watching it will be an amazing experience.

‘We know the people of Portsmouth are genuinely proud of their city, and there’s lots to be proud of.

‘We want people to get behind this because it’s a showcase for the city.

‘I have been to so many events around the world and Southsea Common is an amazing venue.’

Sir Keith Mills, chairman of the event, said: ‘This event is set to take centre stage in the UK in July.

‘This is a historical moment – the first time a British America’s Cup team will race in an official America’s Cup event in UK waters since 1851.

‘The ticket and hospitality packages cater for all requirements. Our aim is to provide something for everyone and to ensure this is both a sporting and an entertainment experience.’

Donna Jones, leader of Portsmouth City Council said: ‘I’m delighted our residents will be able to enjoy this incredible spectacle.

‘Visitors to the city are on the rise and this summer’s event promises to entice many more.

‘It also will provide a massive boost to our marine and maritime industry bringing economic benefit to Portsmouth.’
