ENGLAND football legend Gary Lineker is on the Isle of Wight today mourning the death of his mother.
In a moving tweet this afternoon, the former international striker described his mum Margaret as a ‘wonderful, beautiful mother’.
He wrote: ‘I am profoundly saddened to tell you that my wonderful, beautiful mother has left us. She will though live on in my heart and mind. #RIPMum.’
The football ace is believed to still be on the island – where the 76-year-old live – having travelled there at the weekend after she was taken ill.
The Leicester-born TV pundit had previously cancelled an appearance on Match of The Day.
Since Mr Lineker broke the news of his mother’s death to his four million followers, he has had scores of well-wishers offering their condolences.
His brother Wayne tweeted of the ‘peaceful’ moment he was holding hi mother’s hand as she passed away this afternoon.
In a message on Twitter, he wrote: ‘I was holding her hand when she stopped breathing. She has had a very tough and painful 2 years since she lost her husband my step dad Peter.
‘Not just the pain of losing her loved one but the intense medical problems she had.”
He revealed Margaret had suffered from renal and kidney problems, meaning she needed regular dialysis.
Margaret died at about 1pm today.
