KEEN runner Gemma Green is taking on one of the toughest races to raise awareness for a counselling service.

The Southsea resident is tackling the Sahara desert to get funding for the Portsmouth abuse and rape counselling service (Parcs).

Gemma has worked there for six years.

She said: ‘I decided to do the Marathon des Sables because I wanted to raise awareness for the subject area at Parcs.

‘I am based in the young person’s team which is in a real need of continuing funding.

‘With this in mind I began thinking about what I could do to raise awareness of the subject area and generate some extra funding.

‘The race for me is more than a run – the struggle will mirror what we face at Parcs in terms of funding and visibility.’

Gemma has been training for a year and has completed seven marathons along with half-marathons.

She has also been running on sand and in water.
