COPNOR fire station’s iconic tower has been pulled down as workers demolish the site to make way for a rest home.
Crowds gathered at the Copnor Road site on Saturday to watch as the 60ft tower was taken apart by a cherry picker.
The work is being carried out by Portsmouth Demolition and after a month the job is almost finished.
Project manager Luke St Ledger said: ‘People are interested in it. We had quite a crowd watching it come down.
‘It’s important to local people. We’ve had lots of ex-firemen who used to serve here taking pictures and bits and pieces.’
The fire station closed in January 2008.
It will be replaced by a 50-bed care home, a scheme planners unanimously backed in November.
