THOUSANDS of pounds have been awarded to community and voluntary groups.

The Portsmouth City Community Fund allocated £7,989 to nine organisations.

One of those to benefit is Contact the Elderly.

Contact the Elderly’s fundraising officer Holly Anderson said: ‘The grant will ensure the older members are able to enjoy the Sunday afternoon tea parties for another year.

‘The parties are sometimes the only social outing our guests have and are such an important fixture in their lives, relieving them of their loneliness and isolation.

‘The grant will guarantee the group’s future and enable the friendships that have built up over the years between guests and volunteers to continue to flourish.’
