Hampshire County Council praises Lizzy Yarnold for winter Olympic gold medal win

A COUNCIL has congratulated gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold on her historic win at the Winter Olympics.

The athlete claimed victory on Saturday in PyeongChang after coming first in the women’s skeleton. She has become Britain’s most decorated Winter Olympian.

Lizzy, who lives in Shedfield, received support from Hampshire County Council’s Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme (HTAS) when she moved to the area in 2016.

She was given a free leisure card which allowed her to complete training sessions.

Councillor Andrew Gibson, the executive member for culture, recreation and countryside, said: ‘Our congratulations go to Lizzy for her amazing gold medal win in PyeongChang.

‘We’re proud she was supported by our scheme and that it’s played a part in her securing her place in the Olympic history books.’

HTAS provides athletes with grants for competition and travel costs, physiotherapy and sport science support.
