SAILORS from our region are hoping to be literally flying the flag for Team GB at the Olympics.

Marine engineer, Warrant Officer 2 Martin Wallace, from Fareham and Leading Naval Nurse Alice Jamieson, from Portsmouth, have been selected to take part in the flag raising during medal ceremonies at London 2012.

Ms Jamieson, 22, is involved in the handball and synchronised swimming ceremonies, said: ‘I’m really hoping that I will get the opportunity to raise a British flag or two at the 2012 Olympics, as that would be very special.’

She was chosen due to her dedication to playing for the Royal Navy netball team.

WO2 Wallace, 39, will help raise the flags at Wembley Stadium for the football and at Lee Valley Water Centre for the canoeing events. He was selected due to his contribution to football in the Royal Navy as a player and coach.

He said ‘I have always been a massive football fan, so I cannot wait to raise the flags at Wembley.’
