Havant scuba diver named as one of Britain's first diving '˜wreck champions'
A SCUBA diver who helped lead a mission to map the remains of the historic Second World War Mulberry Harbours has been honoured for her work.
Mum-of-two Alison Mayor, of Havant, has been appointed as one of Britain’s first Wreck Champions, by the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC).
The accolade is in recognition of more than a decade of dedication to researching, exploring and photographing underwater wrecks along the south coast.
The role will see her raising awareness of the UK’s underwater maritime heritage.
Alison, who took up scuba diving at the age of 40, after a friend bought her a try dive with her BSAC club, Southsea Sub-Aqua Club, as a birthday gift, said: ‘I never expected when I first tried diving that my journey would lead me here.
‘As a club we wanted to dive the Mulberry Harbour sites to build a picture of the historic importance of this innovative and ingenious design.’
