Heatwave: Sun-seekers flock to the beach in Portsmouth

Have your say

SCORES of sun-seekers have flocked to the beach as Portsmouth’s spell of sensational summer weather continues.

Southsea seafront has been packed today with people sunbathing, eating ice cream, fishing and just generally taking life easy, with the temperature comfortably in the 20s.

Lynne Green, 57, was among those enjoying the sunshine on the seafront.

She said: ‘It’s nice to have the sun coming through. It makes a big difference. The only trouble is when you have to work.

‘We live up at Chandler’s Ford, but the forecast was nicer for here.’

Aaron Beckingham, 29, of Havant, was also at the seafront with his wife Francesca, 27, and their three young children Aurora, AJ and Ava.

Aaron said: ‘we love to come down here for an ice cream with the kids. We think we’ve found the best ice-cream stand. The weather’s been brilliant.

‘It would be nice if this lasts a bit longer.’

Francesca said it was shaping up to be a fantastic summer.

‘It seems to have come a bit earlier this year, she said.

‘We had a really nice April and this week’s been amazing.’

Portsmouth RNLI lifeguard supervisor Rogan Wheeldon said he wanted people to remember to be sun smart and to ‘slip, slop, slap, wrap, glug’.

He said: ‘Slip on a t-shirt, slap on a hat, slop on some sunscreen, wrap on some sunglasses and glug plenty of water.’
