Sara Pollard, director of Free From Temptation Ltd, talks about what inspired her to do the Race For Life

A charity that is very close to my heart is Cancer Research UK.

As you read this I will be recovering from running this year’s 10km Race For Life which was held at Southsea Common on Sunday.

I will have taken part in the race with one of my best friends Victoria Wright.

When I first started Free From Temptation, I had just moved into a house in Trinity Street in Fareham and met my then-landlady Hilda Daysh.

Hilda was a remarkable woman and supported me very much in starting up my own business.

Still to this day she is one of the main reasons I have been so successful, simply because she believed in me.

Hilda spent hours testing my products, helping me get recipes right and giving me ideas and tips on how to succeed.

She shared my dream of owning my own cafe. She admired my ‘get up and go’ attitude, as she called it.

Hilda told me I reminded her of herself when she was younger.

In 2014 things changed dramatically when she fell ill and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

It didn’t dull her spirit, though, and she powered on with help from family and friends as the going got tougher, and we were all happy to help.

Hilda cared as much for me as I did for her, so we agreed I’d remain her tenant until she died. It meant I was always close at hand in case I was needed by her.

Sadly in January this year she finally lost her battle, leaving behind an amazing legacy.

It was clear to me what I needed to do and in her memory I signed up for the Race For Life.

This year we plan to raise as much money as possible in her memory.

Last year I also ran the race and we raised £100. This year I’d love to double that.

We need to try and find a cure for cancer now, before more lives are taken by this terrible disease.
