Almost a dozen actors from the cast of the hit drama took part in the event, staged at Havant & Waterlooville Football Club, in Martin Road.

Yesterday’s match in Waterlooville helped to raise thousands of pounds for the Portsmouth-based Relay For Life, in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The 24-year-old actor said he was thrilled by the support from the crowd, who cheered as he and his fellow Hollyoaks stars took to the pitch.

‘It’s incredible to see so many people showing up,’ he said.

‘Events like this are so important. The survival rates are getting better but we still need all the support for people who donate to help fund the research.’

It was a tense 90 minutes, with just a single goal scored by the end of the first half by Capita’s Sam White.

After the break, the star-studded squad of actors hit back, levelling the score. But, in the final 10 minutes, White blasted two goals past Hollyoaks’ keeper, clinching a 3-1 victory.

Capita’s manager Shane Rundle said the day had raised at least £9,000 – with more still to come from sponsorship.

‘It’s been absolutely amazing. I’m sure we will get about £10,000,’ he said.

Ann Edwards, 50, of Waterlooville, was one of those who helped to organise the day and was ‘humbled’ by the support of everyone who turned up.

She said: ‘Cancer affects everyone. It doesn’t matter what age you are. So every penny we raise helps to fight it.’

Portsmouth Relay For Life is a 24-hour fundraiser that takes place every July and raises cash for Cancer Research UK.

Yesterday’s event is set to tip this year’s fundraising total by the group to more than £100,000.
