Hundreds flock to Thorney Island firework spectacular

A DAZZLING evening of fireworks left hundreds of people in awe last night.

Families from across the area flocked to Thorney Island Station’s annual bonfire bonanza at Baker Barracks.

The magical display illuminated the island’s sky while children cheered with delight during the impressive show.

The action attracted hundreds of visitors.

And as well as the fireworks and bonfire, revellers also had the chance to join in with a range of carnival rides at the base’s own fair ground.

Angie Gardiner, 68, of Southsea, watched the spectacle with her husband Keith and their granddaughter Flora Gardiner, two.

She said: ‘We’ve all been looking forward to coming out this evening.’

Keith added: ‘I have been living in Southsea for 48 years and this is the first time we have been here.

‘The last time we went to a fireworks display was about 20 years and that was a catastrophe.

‘Tonight has been great, everything is so well organised.’

Sarah Moore, 39, of Emsworth, was with her son Jason, seven and said: ‘We always love coming here.’

Army personnel welcomed families as they entered the base.

Sergeant James Grisley, 32, lives on the island with his wife, Stef, 29, and three children Morgan, seven, Rose, four and Jack, three.

He said: ‘Our unit has worked really hard to get everything ready.

‘We always try to engage with the local community and support local events.

‘So we’re really happy to be running this one for the local area.’

Stef added: ‘This is our fourth one since being here and it went off with a bang.’
