Portsmouth is one of the best places in the country to have a night out on a budget.

According to analysis by short-term loan firm Wonga, which looked at data from PintPrice and Numbeo, Portsmouth is the fifth cheapest place for a night on the town.

The statistics showed the average cost of a pint, as well as how much it would cost for a three-course meal, in the UK’s 30 largest cities.

According to the statistics, the average price of a pint in the city is £3, with the discounted drinks on student nights helping to lower the cost of going out even further.

Wonga also suggests going into Southsea to find some of the cheaper venues in the city.

James McMaster, head of UK marketing at Wonga, said: ‘With so many events planned in the run-up to Christmas, it’s renowned as a tough time to budget.

‘We’ve conducted this research to help people plan a night out and have created a handy guide on the top tips for a night out on a budget.’

The statistics reveal that Newcastle is the cheapest place in the UK for a night out, with the average pint costing £1.85.

Other places listed for cheap nights out were Bradford, Birmingham and Sunderland.
