A PENSIONER who was mugged for her handbag has been given a £200 gift by a firm whose staff heard about her ordeal.

The 83-year-old was robbed as she walked through an alleyway near Stanley Road, Stamshaw, at about 11.15am on Tuesday

The offender approached from behind and stole the woman’s bag from the top of her shopping trolley. The bag was being held tightly in her hand so the woman was pulled to the ground and hit her head and hip, sustaining minor injuries. The van which police believe was involved in the incident was later found in Bedhampton.

The white Citroen Berlingo belonged to Buchanan Building Services and was stolen from Links Lane, Rowands Castle, on Tuesday morning. The firm has now handed over £200 to the victim after a staff whip-round.

Detective Sergeant Mark Hall said: ‘This is a terrible crime against an older, vulnerable, woman just before Christmas.’

Call police on 101.
