The young man, a Polish resident of Cowes, had cut his leg while attempting to climb a rocky cliff and was rescued by a lifeboat crew.

He was put on a stretcher aboard the lifeboat, which delivered him to Trinity Landing, Cowes, where he was transferred to a waiting ambulance.

A spokeswoman for HM Coastguard said: ‘The casualty was handed to an ambulance, but he refused to go to hospital.’

The lifeboat returned to station just after 2 am.
