A FISHERMAN was caught up in a three-hour rescue mission after his boat became stranded in the Solent.

The skipper, who was sailing alone, was unable to move his vessel after it suffered a power failure.

Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS) was paged to the incident at 1am on this morning by the coastguard.

Volunteer lifeboat crews towed the fishing boat to Camber Dock at Old Portsmouth, where the man was helped to shore.

GAFIRS lifeboat coxswain, Pete Byford, said: ‘We soon located the boat which had trouble with its batteries. We rigged a towline and assisted the vessel safely back to Portsmouth Harbour.’

The rescue was GAFIRS’ 88th of the year.
