The Havant U3A has more than 250 members who are in full or partial retirement, and who meet to endorse educational and social opportunities for people no longer in full-time work.

The Havant branch itself encompasses more than 30 local interest groups, in which members pursue particular skills or hobbies such as bird watching, creative writing, French language or line dancing.

Mr Mak joined the group at a meeting at Bedhampton Social Hall for its monthly meeting, where recent excursions were reviewed and plans made for forthcoming events.

He said: ‘It is great to see those members of our community who are no longer in full-time work still acquiring skills and helping each other through the U3A’s educational and social gatherings.

‘Education is one of my key campaigns as MP for Havant, and it should not be seen as something that stops with age.

‘We should always look to better ourselves, and it is wonderful that Havant U3A allows residents to do this in an exciting and sociable setting.’

Beekeeping expert and treasurer of the Portsmouth Beekeeper’s Association, David Nield, spoke as the guest speaker about the importance of protecting local environments and ecologies.

Geoffrey Porter, Chairman of Havant U3A, said: ‘We were pleased to welcome Alan to the meeting, where we discussed the latest news and exciting events that are coming up on our calendar.

‘It is great to see our local MP so supportive of this initiative to get retired residents up and active. With more than 250 members spread across 38 different interest groups – including everything from local history to wine appreciation – Havant U3A is in strong health.

‘We are always looking for new members and interest groups that give an excellent social and educational platform to our retired and semi-retired residents.’
