Fareham MP Suella Fernandes will swap the House of Commons for Southsea Common when she takes on the Great South Run for a cause close to her heart.
Suella will be among the 25,000 or so runners taking on the 10-mile challenge on Sunday, October 25.
She is running in aid of The Haven, a national charity which helps people through the experience of breast cancer by offering free therapy sessions and emotional and physical support.
Suella is hoping to raise about £1,000 to support the charity’s plans to open a new centre in Titchfield later this year.
The charity has already raised £1m for the project after securing a building in the village’s High Street, and now needs to cover costs of refurbishing and operating the building.
Suella said: ‘I have been known to run before – I completed a couple of half marathons a few years ago – but more recently I’ve been concentrating more on running for Parliament than on running races!
‘I wanted to get back into running so 10 miles is a good challenge, and the course is nice and flat.
‘There are about eight weeks to go and I’m really starting training this week – just easing myself in.
‘The route appeals to me as it goes through the dockyard.
‘A lot of my constituents in Fareham have connections to the Royal Navy so it’s special to be able to run through naval areas that aren’t normally open to the public.
‘I have been really inspired by The Haven and the people who work there – it’s a fantastic cause that provides a wonderful service for women with cancer and their families.’
Suella is one of a number of Hampshire MPs who will be taking part in the Morrisons Great South Run, as Eastleigh MP Mims Davies and Southampton’s Caroline Nokes are also planning to take part.
She has set up charity web page where anyone can donate – visit justgiving.com/Suella-Fernandes.
