CAROLINE Dinenage is calling on people from across the area to nominate a community hero as an Olympic torchbearer.
The Gosport MP also said she is working hard to convince officials to allow her borough to be part of the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.
The 70-day event, which starts on May 18 next year, will see the torch carried hundreds of miles by 8,000 inspirational torchbearers.
Mrs Dinenage said: ‘This is a great opportunity for people in Hampshire to get involved in the 2012 Olympics.
‘I encourage everyone to nominate an inspirational local figure to represent the community in this exciting, once-in-a-lifetime experience.’
Portsmouth is one of 74 locations announced that will welcome the Olympic Flame when it arrives from Greece.
The tour begins in Land’s End, Cornwall, on the morning of Saturday, May 19 next year and ends when the torch will be taken to the Olympic Stadium in London on July 27.
It will arrive in Weymouth on July 12 before being taken to Bournemouth, Southampton and then Portsmouth on July 15.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Locog) said the Olympic Flame would come within a one-hour journey of 95 per cent of people in the UK.
