Messages were posted on Hampshire Constabulary’s Facebook page from across the area.

Tanya Hall, 40, of Springwood Avenue, Waterlooville, said the noise took her breath away.

She said: ‘It was so big.

‘It sounded like a gun shot right outside my front door.

‘Everyone said it sounded exactly the same wherever they were.
