A NATIONALLY-important Roman heritage site has a new leader at its helm.

Fishbourne Roman Palace, near Chichester, has announced its new director, Jaane Rowehl.

German-born Mrs Rowehl will replace Christine Medlock, who is standing down after three years in the role to pursue her academic work.

Mrs Rowehl said: ‘I am delighted to have been chosen as the new director for Fishbourne Roman Palace.

‘It is a real honour to be part of, what is, in my view, the most exciting Roman heritage site in the country and I am very much looking forward to starting my new job.;

Tristan Bareham, chief executive of Sussex Past, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Jaane to this exciting post.’

Mrs Rowehl previously worked as museum development officer for East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire, where she helped manage staff and secure funding.
