THE Post Office has confirmed a run-down main branch will close and move to new modern premises.

Havant branch, in North Street, was described as ‘not fit for purpose’ by local councillors.

The branch is set to move to 56 West Street, opposite NatWest bank, and will have extended opening hours.

It will replace homewear shop Ponden Home.

A moving date has not been set but it is expected to be within the next couple of months.

Regional network manager Julia Marwood said: ‘We understand how important Post Office services are to the people of Havant and we are confident this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

‘This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.’

Nationwide the investment programme will see up to 8,000 branches modernised.
