PEOPLE from across Hampshire came together to set a record for the largest seated exercise class in the UK.

The record attempt was carried out in Andover to mark the International Day of the Older Person.

The record breakers included Dacia Rendle, Christine Longyear and Florence Tiller who travelled from Fareham to Andover Leisure Centre.

Florence said: ‘We came because we realise that one day we might need to do these exercises ourselves! We wanted to show our support and it’s great to see so many people getting involved.’

More than 300 people took part in the exercises, which are used to build strength and improve mobility for older people, or people who might be too frail to take part in other forms of exercise.

Gordon Page, 84, who has been going to Steady and Strong classes for five years, said: ‘I couldn’t walk 300 yards but with the classes help and the exercises I saw improvements each time I went.’
