OAP runner-up in UK award

Have your say

A 69-year-old from Gosport has finished runner-up in a competition to find the UK’s most over-active pensioner.

Gerry Goodwin, a former Royal Marine and North Sea diver, was one of five people shortlisted from around the country.

The competition, launched by Janet Street Porter and the Senior Railcard, set out to demonstrate that over 60s are living more active lifestyles than ever before.

Gerry has sailed across the Atlantic four times, twice of which were single-handed, and has recently abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower. He plans to sail around Britain this summer.

He said: ‘Whether it’s sailing, skiing or backpacking round the world, for me there is nothing better than keeping active, getting out and about and enjoying life.’
