YOUNGSTERS showed true grit by taking part in a junior version of the gruelling field gun competition.
Teams of teenagers from HMS Sultan in Gosport and HMS Collingwood in Fareham competed in the Volunteer Cadet Corps Field Gun Competition, with Sultan’s team emerging triumphant.
Cadets aged from nine to 17 compete with the original field guns used at the Battle of Ladysmith during the Boer War.
Jenny Shilling, from St Andrew’s Road, Gosport, was there to support her 13-year-old grandson Reuben Shilling, who was part of the Sultan team.
She said: ‘It’s obvious from watching them to see how much effort they put into the training.’
The contest was part of the annual Sultan Summer Show, which took place at the weekend.
