THE friend of a woman who died of cancer aged 25 has sung a moving tribute in her memory.

Sarah Rutter, from Westbourne, died of cervical cancer just seven months after she was diagnosed with the illness.

Her friend Sophie Butler, a 26-year-old archaeology student at the University of Portsmouth, wrote A Song for Sarah in her memory.

She performed the song on Saturday at The Rowans Hospice, which had cared for Sarah in her final days.

Sophie has now decided to release the song to raise money for The Rowans and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust.

‘It was very successful,’ said Sophie. ‘The people at The Rowans were very appreciative and we sold quite a few more CDs.

‘Performing the song was difficult.

‘There were some tears in the room.

‘I have done quite a few open mic nights before but that didn’t make it any less nerve-wracking.

‘The important thing now is just to get the message out there and help it to build momentum.’
