SPORT lovers are being urged to take part in Olympic-inspired activities this weekend.

Independent charity Join in Local Sport has set up gymnastic sessions at Priory Community Sports Centre, Southsea and synchronised swimming at Eastney Swimming Pool and Havant Academy.

The event is backed by decathlon gold medallist Daley Thompson, swimming silver medallist Sharron Davies and world-record triple jumper Jonathan Edwards, who are visiting as many venues as they can around the country. A total of 5,000 sports events are taking place across the country in a bid to keep people’s interest in Olympic sports alive.

Minister for Civil Society Nick Hurd said: ‘We backed Join In Local Sport with £2m so that we can get thousands of people down to their local sports clubs this weekend to find out what sporting opportunities are available.

‘We want to use the Games to inspire a new generation of sports people.’
