Perhaps it was a sprinkling of grass seed on Pompey’s sometime’s threadbare pitch.

But whatever attracted a small group of pigeons to feed at Fratton Park during the match against Luton Town, they weren’t going to let 22 footballers and thousands of noisy fans disturb their feast.

Between six and 10 birds spent most of the second half pecking at the pitch on either side of the penalty area at the Fratton End, grudgingly flying off only when the action got too close and then swooping immediately to resume their meal as soon as play switched elsewhere.
