PORTSMOUTH’S first young poet laureate is off to a huge arts festival to inspire others and share his love for writing.

Joe McQuilken will make an appearance at Camp Bestival, in Dorset, this weekend.

Joe became the city’s first young poet laureate over four months ago and has been visiting schools and running workshops ever since.

He has been urging young people to take up poetry.

At the event Joe will be given two 15 minute sets to show off his work and his love for Portsmouth.

He will be joined by authors, comedians and musicians including hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks.

Joe said: ‘I don’t really get nervous anymore, I have got used to being in front of lots of people, so I’m not worried about that.”

‘I am going to the festival open minded, although I would really love to meet other poets and authors.

‘I am just excited to be there, and whoever I meet, will add to the great experience.”

Joe has already been involved in several workshops, including the Olympic Torch Relay at Fratton Park in front of 300 school children.

He said: ‘I really throw myself into the workshops and I thoroughly enjoy meeting different people.’

‘There are lots of different styles that inspire me, and it is by meeting new, inspirational people at the workshops which help me write.’
