PREPARATIONS are gearing up for Portsmouth’s first Pride Festival.

Organisers picked up a cheque for £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to ensure the inaugural event later this summer goes off without a hitch.

Steve Coote from Portsmouth Pride said: ‘It all began last November when someone had the great idea of putting together a Pride in Portsmouth.

‘We set up a Facebook page and there was so much enthusiasm we couldn’t not do it.

‘We realised this was something people really wanted.

‘It’s going to be a very family-oriented event. We’re really looking forward to it. It’s not just about gay pride. It’s about bringing Portsmouth together for everybody looking for equality.’

The day begins with a parade which leaves the Guildhall Square at midday. That will be followed by a variety show on Southsea Common. It takes place on June 20. Go to portsmouthpride.co.uk.
