IT was a day to remember for five schoolchildren who were presented with qualifications from Princess Anne.

The Princess Royal visited the Portsmouth Sail Training Trust, a new charity which aims to raise aspirations and provide opportunities for disadvantaged young people in the city.

Benjamin Esposito, Tom Wilkinson, Frank Leslie, Aidan Meli and Zack White, along with 60 of their fellow students met the princess yesterday.

They have been gaining qualifications as part of their work with the trust.

Working initially with students from Charter Academy in Somers Town, the trust is focused on developing key skills such as trust, teamwork, responsibility and leadership.

Luke Justice, 13, from the school, said: ‘I was really nervous when I first came here and had never been on a boat.

‘Now, I can’t wait for each week to come around. I love all the new things we do like learning to sail, make films and mending boats.’

Edward Phillips, the trust’s chief executive, said: ‘What we have achieved to date is already having a tremendous impact on some young lives.’
