SCORES of people gathered to welcome the Princess Royal to Hayling Island this afternoon.
Princess Anne arrived at Mengham Park in a helicopter, accompanied by royal protection officers, before making the short car journey to Hayling Island Sailing Club.
She is here to watch more than 300 of the country’s best young sailors battle it out in the 2011 Volvo Royal Yachting Association Youth Nationals.
As patron of the RYA, the Princess Royal has a keen interest in racing and will this afternoon be watching five courses of spitfires, lasers, laser radials, 29ers and 420s.
She arrived at the sailing club where she was met by Anthony Penfold, rear commodore of the sailing club, and Havant Mayor Yvonne Weeks.
She then changed into waterproofs and made her way on to the RIB, Escapade, to watch the action up-close.
