CHILDREN and their parents were beaming with pride as they collected awards for completing a reading challenge.

Scores of families attended the winners’ event at Southsea Castle for the Summer Reading Challenge.

The scheme encourages children aged four to 11 to read six books during the long summer holiday.

Children can read whatever they like - fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library.

Luke Pledge, 10, from Southsea, went one step further by visiting every library in Portsmouth during the holidays.

‘I really enjoyed it,’ he said.

‘I enjoyed having the chance to learn about new things.’
