More than 1,500 gift boxes were sent from Fareham to the Philippines containing toys, toiletries and fun educational items from the Rotary Club of Fareham as part of the Christmas appeal.

Bob Mussellwhite, president of the Rotary Club of Fareham, said: ‘We certainly brought a lot of happiness to many children in the Philippines who may not otherwise have received any gifts. Just look at the smiles on their faces!’

Furthermore, Rotarian Bob Marshall is working with the Philippine Community Fund in order to embark on an ambitious project costing more than £10,000.

This project aims to install PV solar panels at the PCF Tondo School, which is located in one of the most deprived areas of Manila.

Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Mike Ford, said: ‘It gives us, as mayor and mayoress, great pride to see our local Rotary Club undertaking this project and I hope that it illustrates not only the superb work done by Rotarians in our town, but also how Fareham itself supports those less privileged than ourselves, through projects by many of our excellent community groups.

‘Providing solar-generated power to this school in Manila is clearly very important and we hope, will lead to further such installations in the country.’

Former Rotary Club president, John Rowlinson, said: ‘The finances for the project are now in place, the design work is complete and in the next few weeks a working team will be travelling out to Manila to supervise the installation and commissioning of the system.

‘We expect it to be complete and operational by May of this year.

‘This project has brought smiles to the children of Manila but has also been a great source of pride for Fareham itself.’
